Signs you might have a transmission problem

Telltale Signs of a Transmission Problem

In a transmission that is in healthy working condition, the vehicle will remain in the gear you put it in, or the gear the computer tells it to be in for the rang of RPMs. However, in a vehicle where gears are slipping, it may pop out of gear without warning while driving, and end up in neutral. This may be bewildering and unsafe. When going out of your way to avoid a crazy driver the last thing you want is your transmission failing to give power to your driving wheels. If these issues are new, or even a consistent ongoing problem, it most definitely may be time, to have the transmission in your vehicle checked out, and one should not hesitate with getting it into a shop for peace of mind.

Some transmission troubles are obvious, and can slap even the most clueless of people in the face. Fluid leaks can be one of them, if you notice your fluid leaking, taking your vehicle to be checked is imperative and should not be put off, because tomorrow or next week could very well be too late. The transmission fluid is the lifeline to your vehicles ability to shift properly. Some people may think, “oh it’s just a lose bolt or bad seal” and procrastinate on addressing the issue. Suddenly your easy fix has turned into a serious issue and in the end, you’ve caused way more damage just by letting the leak go unchecked. If the fluid is healthy it should be bright red, transparent, and has a pleasant semisweet smell when everything is functioning properly. If you notice the color of your fluid getting dark or your fluid beginning to smell unpleasant or burnt, it is time to start looking into servicing your transmission with completely fresh fluid and filter. The transmission fluid in your vehicle holds a unique mission within your vehicle that it unlike the other fluid it may contain. Your transmission does not deplete and burn away the fluid while in use like the engine will with motor oil, so if you are checking your fluid and notice that you are running low on fluid, there is definitely a leak happening somewhere!

If you are driving a vehicle with a standard transmission, or an automatic vehicle that does not possess a dipstick conveniently under your hood, you may not have as easy of a time checking out the levels and condition of your fluid. This is mainly because the fluid in manually shifted vehicles typically need to be checked from the under carriage of the vehicle directly from the transmission case through the fill plug. If you feel the transmission may be losing fluid and are unable to check and find a cause, have a mechanic check and pinpoint the location of the leak for you. If your fluid levels are okay, and the fluid is not burnt, and you are still weary of an issue, look out for other telltale transmission signs.

Transmission fluid is a slippery liquid that acts as a lubricant for all the moving parts inside of your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also works as a coolant and an adherent fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission.

A CVT is an automatic transmission system which offers a smoother driving experience by optimizing the process of change. The transition between gears becomes almost smooth by the design of the CVT, and the effect of "shift-shock" is greatly lessened. CVTs also provide better fuel economy and power consumption, as it allows the engine to operate at optimum power, regardless of how fast the vehicle travels. The word "continuously variable" implies that the CVT allows for a constant change within the engine, instead of the actual gear "stages," so that there is no apparent shift between gears. Different types of CVTs Many types of continuously variable transmissions are available, many of which are now available from major automakers. Pulley-Based The most common CVT uses a complex pulley system to provide smooth gear changes instead of gears. If you’re having issues with your cvt give us a call we offer a free initial check out. 5 Tips that will help you save money at a transmission shop! 1. Today's technology is great! When it comes to finding a good transmission shop, it's right at your fingertips. Checking the reviews of a shop on the internet is the first step to saving you money. This may sound silly but, good shops work hard for good reviews. 2. Resist the impulse to call a transmission shop and ask for a "worst case scenario", or a "ball park". Worst case is buying something you don't need. There are a lot of shops that will just throw a number out, all too quickly, hoping to land the job. 3. Keep in mind that a transmission has 300-400 moving parts. When someone says they can rebuild your transmission for a certain dollar figure, how many of those parts are they going to replace? Everyone is convinced that rebuilding a transmission means you take out ALL the old parts and put new ones back in their place. That's simply not the case. 4. It’s easy to make up prices over the phone, but a professional shop will always ask you to bring the vehicle in for a proper diagnosis. Doesn't it make more sense to base your decision on a thorough diagnosis and accurate pricing information, rather than some sort of random guess work by someone that hasn't even looked at your vehicle? 5. Honest shops make sure they only sell what is needed and do a good job for you. An honest shop will educate the customer, rather than trying to play them for a sucker. If you want to get the best price, seek out a professional transmission shop like Eagle Transmission. Serving Dallas Area and Ardmore Ok Eagle Transmission Shop
