700R4 Performance Specs


The 700R4 was a 4-speed transmission. Once the transmission was renamed to 4L60 in 1990, this naming agreement offered a variety of key characteristics regarding this transmission. The 4 indicates that it's a 4-speed transmission. The L indicates that the transmission is laterally positioned. The 60 suggests the transmission is graded for applications up to 6000lbs gross vehicle weight (GVW). The sum of force that this can be will vary based on year of assembly.

Construction
The 700R4 case has a separate piece created of cast aluminum. The 700R4 is 23.4 inches long and is 155lbs. It holds a total of nearly eleven quarts of transmission fluid. The 700R4, produced by General Motors/Hydramatic, is deemed one of the best overdrive transmissions ever built. This transmission was introduced in 1982 as a substitute for the TH350-transmission, with the goal of improving fuel economy. This transmission had a lower first gear ratio, which was good for performance at low vehicle speeds, whereas the 30 minutes overdrive offered major fuel economy improvement. The name changed in 1990 to 4L60, where one of the most significant modification came in 1993 once the electronically controlled versions were introduced. This was essentially the end of the 700R4, or 4L60, as we knew it.
