Tearing Down a Transmission

True Story: Couple weeks ago we towed in a gorgeous ‘73 Camaro

The Camaro owner had just put a new engine in his car to the tune of $12,000! Looking on the internet he found a “REBUILT” transmission for $1,000 in the Fort Worth area. Thinking he scored a super deal he ran down and purchased the transmission. He took it home and spent the next weekend in his driveway, on his back, installing it. Less than 100 miles this “REBUILT transmission shelled!

This Camaro owner called us and we towed his car into our shop in Denton. Once we got the transmission out of his car, we disassembled it. We found the whole transmission had rust on almost every part! Someone had taken this transmission from a junkyard painted and called it ‘REBUILT”. Don’t let this happen to you! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is… You have to realize even in 1973 when this car was new this transmission cost about a$1,000 to rebuild, and that was 45 years ago. In the transmission industry you’re gonna get what you pay for!!!

Something to consider, most transmission shops have a labor rate of $115 an hour across the U.S. Technicians from one shop are not going to be any quicker than another shop to take the transmission out of your car, disassemble it,rebuild it, and then reinstalled it. So, the labor from one shop to the next should be pretty close to the same. The difference in the cost of a transmission repair, between shops, always falls to the quality of parts that are replaced inside the transmission. Today shops cut corners by putting used or junkyard parts, inside the transmission being repaired. sensors and solenoids from China or Taiwan.

Don’t make the mistake to think because someone calls a transmission “REBUILT”, they turn the transmission upside down, shake all the old parts out and replace them with new ones. This is simply not the case!!!! There are 300-400 moving parts in an automatic transmission, NO ONE because they label the transmission rebuilt, ever replaces all 400 parts! Remember in the state of Texas to call a transmission “REBUILT” you only have to replace 2 parts.BUYERS BEWARE!!!! Below is a picture of the parts found inside this Camaro Transmission.
