Unless you’ve had a transmission rebuild before, you probably didn't know there are different types of repairs. First things first, what is a transmission, and what is its purpose? A vehicle’s transmission is a mechanical system made of different parts that work together to transfer power to the wheels. As time goes by and the vehicle is used, these parts wear out and need to be either fixed or replaced.
When having transmission problems, the majority of people decide to take it to their trusted transmission shop where it can be well taken care of. Generally, this is the most popular option because of how much time and money that can be saved. Rebuilding a vehicle’s transmission takes care of replacing the worn-out parts and keeping what is working properly without replacing the entire transmission while making sure it is working at its highest potential.
Now a transmission rebuild is a major mechanical overhaul, the complete removal of the transmission from the body of the vehicle. After the transmission is removed, every part is inspected and cleaned in a special cleaning solution. Once that is done, the replacement or refurbishment of any severely damaged or worn transmission parts follows.

However, here is where the different types of transmission rebuild come in. The transmission rebuild falls under two main categories: Soft Parts and Hard Parts.

Soft Parts

Within the mechanical system, the transmission is composed of many parts that are made from materials that will come across deterioration over time. Deterioration will happen no matter the consistency of maintenance because of the friction they are put through; some of these parts are bands, clutches, gaskets, seals, etc. In order to secure a good quality transmission rebuild, the replacement of Soft Parts needs to occur.

Hard Parts

The term “Hard Parts'' is used in the industry to represent parts that are mostly made of aluminum, brass, magnesium, or steel. Now, the transmission’s hard parts are considered to be the most vital parts of the transmission which include the clutch drum, planetary gear set, pump, etc. The composition of these parts makes it impossible to determine with accuracy if there is a problem with them before disassembly. By the way, hard parts are not designed to wear out or break, but it does not mean it never happens. When they are failing, they are very difficult to recognize until the transmission is put apart. Failing transmission hard parts let you know there is a problem instantly, the transmission could still be working normally but the internal parts could be getting ready to give up. Problems with hard parts are typically found out during other repairs. Hard parts can have problems because of different reasons. After a certain amount of miles are put on a vehicle, parts can wear down to the point of failure. However the transmissions parts can fail because there is too much of a heavy load being put on the transmission, or the way the vehicle is being driven in a manner that a transmission was not meant for. All of these can cause stress on the hard parts of the transmission, and the transmission fails.
