Answer : Torque Converter Failures
Early signs of torque converter failure usually begin at freeway speeds. You may notice a shudder or a slip between 45-55 MPH. There are a lot of people that think the torque converter needs to be replaced once they experience this shudder or slip. The truth is there are lots of things that can cause the torque converter to shudder. A bad lock-up solenoid or debris in the valve body. Replacing the torque converter can be an expensive endeavor, because the transmission must be removed from the vehicle to get to the torque converter. However, if the shudder is caused by a bad solenoid or even a bad sensor, the problem can be solved by replacing the bad component. Replacing a bad sensor or solenoid is very inexpensive, compared to the cost of a torque converter replacement.
To find out the cause of a torque converter shudder, Eagle Transmission of Denton offers a FREE external diagnosis. Failure to solve a torque converter shudder can cause damage to the torque converter and possibly to the transmission.
In 1905 Dr. Fottinger, of Germany invented the torque converter. Originally designed for driving the propeller of steam turbine ships, the torque converter found its way into the automotive industry.
The torque converter is the component of the transmission that allows the vehicle to come to a full stop without killing the engine. It acts like a clutch in a manual transmission. The inside of a torque converter looks like a jet engine (see picture above). The torque converter has a series of blades that pull fluid through the torque converter, this causes the front pump to turn, as the front pump turns it creates pressure inside the transmission.
The lock-up torque converter was designed in the 70’s during the gas crisis. A clutch was added to the inside of the torque converter to stop slippage at freeway speeds. This in turn causes better gas mileage.
